Day 11 – Picks from the Produce Stand

Romans 8:6     The mind of the sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace.

I was asked about my fast from a co-worker. I told her that my fast is spiritual, not just physical. She asked me why I wanted to do it, and I talked to her about wanting to submit fully to God, and told her about my struggles with food and my body. I realized, however, I didn’t have a scripture verse to share with her. That really bothered me because the Word is Truth, and it is the foundation of everything I believe.

Anyway, this was a couple of days ago, and I asked God to reveal a good scripture to help explain my heart regarding this 90 day fast. During my quiet time today I was reading Romans 8 and I came across a couple verses that describe my reasons exactly.

First is verse 6 in Romans chapter 8 – “The mind of a sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace.”  To be controlled by the Spirit is my goal. I want my heart and mind to be so in tune with the Spirit of God that he infiltrates every moment. I want to have the life that only God can give and to have the Peace that only Jesus can give and that begins with submitting to the Spirit.

Second is a few verses later in Romans 8. It begins with verse 13 and continues to 14 – “For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. ” This fast has a tremendous amount to do with surrendering in obedience to God, but it also has a lot to do with putting to death the misdeeds of the body. My addiction to food has ruled my life my entire adulthood, and it is a stumbling block for me when I try to walk with God. For that reason, it must go, and stay gone once and for all. I don’t want anything to get in the way of me being led by the Spirit to walk with Jesus.

See, God is so faithful. I asked for a verse and less than 48 hours later I found the exact one I needed. Do you realize that God is always speaking to us? Whether we choose to listen or not is up to us.

produceSo, Day 11 was good on a spiritual level and average on a physical one. I went to the store for a few things and stopped by the produce stand for some more raw local honey. (Yes, I realize honey is not vegan. I’m okay with this exception.) While I was there I saw the most beautiful local sweet onions  and strawberries. Of course I picked some up because if there is one thing I have learned from eating this way is to use what is available when it is available. Eating according to the season you are in is always a good decision.  It supports the Farm to Table movement, which I believe is the healthiest way to eat.

I didn’t try any new recipes today, but I did make the popcorn on the stove again. It’s the perfect snack when I’m craving salty food. I try to listen to my body and what it is craving. God designed these beautiful machines and they are incredibly capable of healing themselves and taking care of themselves if we will listen.

Kind of like God, right? He is capable of healing and provision, but we have to listen to Him. We have to walk with Him and get to know Him. Then we will heed His voice when He speaks to us. When was the last time you remember hearing the still small voice of the Spirit of God?

Be Blessed!
